Leipzig's new super primary school: 42 million for better teaching!
On August 22, 2025, the new Großzschocher elementary school in Leipzig was officially handed over, marking the first building block of a new educational campus in Leipzig's southwest. The Saxon Minister of Culture Conrad Clemens, the school mayor Vicki Felthaus and the building mayor Thomas Dienberg were present at the opening. The new building replaces the existing elementary school and offers students as well as teaching and after-school staff a modern educational environment.
The new construction of the Großzschocher primary school required an impressive investment of around 42 million euros, of which around 11 million euros were provided as funding by the Free State of Saxony. The school offers space for up to 670 students, who are taught in a five-class system. As of the beginning of this school year, the first classes have already moved into the new building.
Establishment of the educational campus
The Großzschocher school is just the first of several new buildings planned on the educational campus. A daycare center is scheduled to be completed by spring 2027, followed by a community school, which is scheduled to open by the start of the 2033/2034 school year. In the coming years, the educational campus will house numerous facilities aimed at strengthening early childhood education and improving networking.
The innovative school building is designed with a compact, square floor plan and has a three-field sports hall that can also be used for club sports. Green roofs and photovoltaic systems have also been installed, which underlines the focus on sustainable construction. A CO2-controlled ventilation system was implemented to reduce noise pollution from road traffic.
Aesthetics and art in construction
Two Leipzig architectural firms and other specialist planners worked together to plan the campus. The facade design of the school building will be repeated in the future daycare building in order to create an aesthetic connection. Art in architecture is implemented through hoop-shaped sculpture groups at various locations on campus. The artist Philipp Fritzsche realized this pilot project in cooperation with the cultural office in order to artistically enhance the environment of the educational institution.
The official handover of the new primary school and the upcoming expansion of the educational campus underline the city of Leipzig's commitment to a future-oriented education policy. The extensive investment in modern educational infrastructure ensures that students in the Großzschocher region have an optimized learning environment.
