Colorful messages: CSD service in Leipzig celebrates diversity and courage
Leipzig, Deutschland - On June 22, 2025, the third service of the Catholic Youth Leipzig for the Christopher Street Day (CSD) took place in the Propsteikirche Leipzig. This special service was celebrated in collaboration with diocese pastor Michael Kreher and youth officer Stefan Plattner. The topics of courage, visibility, injury and the longing for an open church were the focus of the event. Stefan Plattner emphasized that the CSD is not a mere costume festival, but an expression of the resistance of queer people against violence and exclusion, which underlines the social relevance of the event.
As part of his speech, Plattner dealt with the challenges that many queer people experience, hiding parts of their identity for fear of exclusion. A remarkable statement by a young person that Jesus would run at the CSD initially hit Plattner unexpectedly. Later, however, he considered this idea convincing. "Jesus was always with the outline," said Plattner, adding that Jesus would probably dance and laugh at the CSD and convey the message of love to people.
a place of exchange and community
The service ended with an exchange in the courtyard of the church, where drinks and a special rainbow pizza were offered. This gesture symbolized the colorful and changing church that offers space for diversity and community.
The discussion about visibility and the rights of queer people is not limited to church space. According to the information from CSD Leipzig , it is important to promote the sensitization of law enforcement and enforcement authorities for queer topics. Queere people can be both victims and perpetrators of crimes, which underlines the need to recognize hate crimes from the perspective of those affected and to punish them accordingly.
There are suggestions for naming contact persons within the authorities who specialize in queer topics. In addition, regular advanced and further education for discriminatory use with queer people should take place. The claim Queerer perpetrator was also particularly emphasized: inside to accommodate that corresponds to your gender identity, in the prison. A first step in this direction has already been taken: since February 1, 2021, a contact person has been available for LSBTTIQ* in the Leipzig public prosecutor.
The initiative of the Catholic Youth Leipzig remains an encouraging sign of an open and diverse society. The CSD and the associated concerns will continue to be an important part of social discourse, both in church and state contexts.
