New air freight center at Leipzig Airport: REALERM takes over Amazon site!

Flughafen Leipzig/Halle, 04435 Schkeuditz, Deutschland - Leipzig/Halle Airport, known as Germany's second largest cargo airport, faces significant changes. After the end of Amazon at the location, the US company Reaterm acquired the former Amazon site and announces a new construction project. A modern air freight system is planned, which comes up to 45,000 square meters of storage space. The system is directly connected to the roller field, which should significantly accelerate the freight movement between the aircraft and truck. Lynn Kau, Senior Vice President Corporate Development at Realterm, emphasizes the growth potential of the project, which could increase operational efficiency.

Frank Pieper from Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG emphasizes the excellent conditions that the location for air freight companies offers. The construction project thus aims to further consolidate Leipzig/Halle as an important logistics location.

Construction of a new air freight center

In cooperation with Leipzig/Halle Airport, the real estate company Dietz AG announced the construction of a new air freight center in cooperation with this project. This investment, which is estimated at a proud 40 million euros, is to be realized until the end of this year. The first construction phases, which include an area of 23,000 square meters, were announced for early 2014. Another section that could be added by the end of 2018 will provide a further 15,000 square meter freight area.

A new hangar is currently being built in the northern area of the airport, which should offer space for up to six large -scale aircraft. A new maintenance base is also set up there, which will accommodate the Antonow 124 of the cargo airline Volga-Dnepr. This commitment emphasizes the ambitions of the airport to establish itself next to the leading location Frankfurt am Main as one of the most important air freight locations.

With these developments, Leipzig/Halle Airport shows that despite the departures of large companies such as Amazon, it is determined to invest in the infrastructure and to strengthen its position in the international air freight business.
