New documentation center in Borna: Saxony's history comes to life!
In the town of Borna, not far from Leipzig, a new documentation center for the regional and economic history of Saxony is being built. The project is supported by the Saxon Economic Archives (SWA) and DOKMitt e. V. and aims to preserve important historical and economic archives and make them accessible to the public. The construction project is part of a cooperation with several partners and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, according to ahoi-leipzig.de.
With an investment volume of 16.5 million euros, funded by the Investment Act for Coal Regions and the Free State of Saxony, the realization of the three-story archive building is secured. The district archive, the SWA and the DOKMitt e. V. housed under one roof. The laying of the foundation stone is planned for May 27, 2024, in the presence of the Prime Minister of Saxony, as swa-leipzig.de reports.
Background and objectives
The DOKMitt e. For more than ten years, V. has been pursuing the goal of building a documentation center that preserves the history and present of the Central German lignite mining area. The SWA, which was founded in 1993, specializes in securing and preserving Saxony's economic archives. Both institutions aim to appeal to a broad audience with their collections, including historians, social scientists, students and interested citizens.
The Borna location was chosen because of its logical connection, as the city has both S-Bahn connections and nearby motorway exits. This makes it easier to access the documentation center's planned offerings, which also include a shared educational campus with the district's adult education center. A parking space with an electric car charging station is also planned.
Moving and challenges
The move of the Saxon Economic Archives from Leipzig to the southern area will represent a major challenge for the SWA employees, as restrictions in event and usage activities are to be expected during the preparation for the move. The aim is to complete the move smoothly in the first half of 2026. The SWA and DOKMitt e. V. are also planning a book publication and a series of lectures in collaboration with the Museum of the City of Borna on the occasion of the city's 775th anniversary.
Additionally, DOKMitt e. V. has free brochures on its homepage that document the memories of former miners and thus record a piece of contemporary history. Access to the various collections is intended to be made easier for those with legitimate interests in order to preserve the important history of the region for future generations.
