Violent storm over Leipzig: squalls, floods and fears!
On Tuesday, July 16, 2025, Leipzig was hit by a violent thunderstorm front, which caused significant damage and traffic disruptions. Gusts and heavy rain affected the city and caused flooding and falling roof parts. The German Weather Service (DWD) reported that gusts of up to 65 km/h were measured in Holzhausen, with local speeds of up to 80 km/h possible. Precipitation in Saxony temporarily reached levels of up to 30 liters per hour and exceeded the storm limit in some areas. This extreme weather situation was the result of a cold front from the west that hit warm, moist air over Saxony.
Meteorologist Helga Scheef explained that the unstable stratified air led to the formation of thunderstorm towers. Shortly after Tuesday afternoon, the thunderstorms erupted over Leipzig. Several underpasses in Sellerhausen were under water, which significantly affected bus and tram traffic. Social media users shared numerous videos documenting the frightening weather conditions.
Warnings and predictions
The DWD warned of another strong thunderstorm in several districts in northern Saxony on Wednesday. The valid weather warnings extended up to the second warning level, while warning level one applied to most of Saxony. According to meteorologist Scheef, the situation will remain tense until Wednesday evening, as moist and unstable air is still present, which promotes the spontaneous formation of thunderstorms.
The weather forecast for the coming days initially promises changeable weather with local thunderstorms and showers throughout Saxony. The weather is expected to calm down on Friday and Saturday, with temperatures potentially ranging between 22 and 29 degrees Celsius. On Sunday there is a chance of further thunderstorms and rain with temperatures around 30 degrees.
The German Weather Service regularly provides information about the weather situation in Germany and issues comprehensive severe weather warnings. These warnings cover, among other things, wind gusts, thunderstorms and heavy rain and are divided into four danger levels. There can be several warnings in one district at the same time, which underlines the urgency of the current weather situation. It remains important for Leipzig and the surrounding districts to keep a close eye on further developments and to take appropriate precautionary measures.
In summary, the severe weather events in Leipzig are a clear indication of the challenges that extreme weather conditions bring with them. It remains to be hoped that the situation can be brought under control soon.
