Gigantic air freight center: Realterm brings 45,000 square meters to Leipzig!
A new air freight facility will be built at Leipzig/Halle Airport in the near future, which is being planned by the US real estate developer Realterm. This facility will offer extensive storage space of up to 45,000 square meters and be closely connected to the airport apron. This allows aircraft to be loaded directly from the warehouse, which is a significant advantage for the air cargo industry. The airport has already established itself as an important cargo hub, which is particularly emphasized by Frank Pieper, Senior Vice President Business Development at Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG.
Realterm has over 30 years of experience in developing air cargo real estate and operates a portfolio of approximately 1.6 million square meters at 34 airports worldwide. The proposed air cargo facility will be designed as a “tailor-made facility” to meet the needs of express, e-commerce and general cargo handling. Cabins for aircraft parking and truck handling areas are also provided.
Construction and development
However, the exact design of the new logistics center will only be determined after marketing. Realterm is currently looking for long-term tenants, particularly in the express freight and online retail sectors. This shows that quick and efficient handling of cargo is crucial to meet the needs of the industry. Although the construction costs were not directly stated, experts expect an average investment volume of around 50 million euros for similar systems.
There are currently lightweight construction halls on the site of the planned facility, which will be used by Amazon until the end of 2023. Demolition of these existing buildings is expected to be completed by July 2024 to make way for the new development.
Economic importance
Air freight is becoming increasingly important for the Leipzig/Halle region as the demand for fast transport solutions increases. Realterm's decision to invest in this lucrative market segment highlights the airport's growth potential in this regard. Most recently, a $270 million air cargo facility was built at JFK Airport in New York, underscoring the trend toward expansion in the air cargo sector.
The plans for the new air freight facility at Leipzig/Halle Airport not only promise new jobs, but could also further strengthen the region's competitiveness in international trade. The combination of ideal operating conditions and the focus on high-quality logistics solutions ensures that the location will continue to play a central role in the air freight industry in the future.
