Doctors in dialogue: AI is revolutionizing healthcare in Leipzig!

The 129th German Doctors' Day will take place in Leipzig from May 27th to 30th, 2025. The event will begin in the Nikolaikirche with the opening on May 27th and will continue in the Congress Center Leipzig with ongoing work sessions. Around 1,000 guests, including Federal Health Minister Nina Warken, are expected. It is the new minister's first public appearance before the medical profession. The number of participants also includes 250 members of the “Parliament of Doctors”.

The general discussion sessions primarily focus on the health policy projects of the new federal government. The aim is to comprehensively discuss the practical implementation and possible gaps in the government's work program. A central topic during the Doctors' Day will be the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare and research. Other important topics include the amendment of the fee schedule for doctors and the medical aspects regarding abortion.

A dialogue about artificial intelligence

On May 26, 2025, a special dialogue with young doctors will take place in the run-up to Doctors' Day. The theme of the event is “AI specifically in everyday medical practice”. Dr. Klaus Reinhardt, President of the German Medical Association and the German Medical Association, will appear as an introductory speaker. Other speakers include renowned experts such as Prof. Dr. Aldo Faisal from the University of Bayreuth, as well as Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Ulrike I. Attenberger from the Medical University of Vienna, who leads the “Artificial Intelligence in Medicine” working group of the German Medical Association.

The German Medical Association has dealt intensively with the challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence in the healthcare system. A theses paper from the “Digitization in Health Care” committee describes the need to inform the medical profession about the possibilities and risks of AI. Digital transformation in particular is seen as crucial for the implementation of AI. The Central Ethics Committee of the BÄK has also published a statement on decision support through AI, which was prepared in 2021.

Importance of digitalization in medicine

Dr. Klaus Reinhardt emphasizes that the importance of AI in medicine is constantly growing and opens up new possibilities in diagnostics, therapy decisions and therapy development. Prof. Dr. Ulrike Attenberger explains that AI can relieve not only diagnostic but also administrative tasks. Standardization and interoperability are an important topic, as deficiencies in these areas have been identified as deficits in the German healthcare system.

In order to actively shape the change to AI-supported medicine, teaching digital and communication skills is crucial. A podcast entitled “Doctors’ Day 2025” will also be offered at the event, in which Dr. Klaus Reinhardt and moderator Daniel Finger discuss current topics.
