New residential project on Johannisallee: 202 apartments until 2027!
Johannisallee, Leipzig, Deutschland - On June 2, 2025, an important construction project in Leipzig ensures a breath of fresh air in urban development. The Leipzig housing association (LWB) now gave the starting signal for the construction of a new apartment block on Johannisallee. Massive clearings have been observed in this area in recent months, which caused excitement in the city society in early 2024. The construction work for the latest and largest project of the LWB began in February 2025. A construction pit is currently excavated and old foundations are exposed to create space for the planned U-shaped building ensemble, which will consist of nine apartment buildings with a total of 202 apartments.
of the 202 apartments are 104 subsidized social housing, the financing of which is secured by the Free State of Saxony with 5.9 million euros. All apartments are equipped with balconies, loggias or terraces and include a variety of 1 to 5-room apartments in seven and eight-storey buildings. The project's shell is to be completed by July 2026, so that the first tenants can move in on schedule in April 2027. On the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone on May 23, 2025, State Secretary Barbara Meyer emphasized the importance of this residential project for combating the housing shortage in the region.
sustainability and quality of life
The new construction project is combined with a comprehensive concept to improve the quality of life of the residents. In addition to the apartments, two commercial units and rooms are planned for the neighborhood work. The courtyard is equipped with green areas, playgrounds as well as grill and table tennis courts. The roofs of the new buildings are greened and provided with photovoltaic systems, while underfloor waste containers will make the waste disposal efficiently.
in Leipzig is not only built on Johannisallee. Another project that started in autumn 2023 provides for the construction of 100 new social housing in Mockau. This measure, for which State Secretary Meyer laid the foundation in February 2024, is also funded by the Free State and is expected to be completed by August 2025. The total costs of the new building amount to around 28.1 million euros. Here, too, sustainable living is used: green facades, photovoltaic systems and more than 300 bicycle parking spaces are planned.
housing in Saxony in focus
The city of Leipzig has bound funding for a total of 2,893 new social housing since 2017. In addition, 504 other social housing will be available for modernization in the next few years. The funding for social housing in Saxony experiences an easy increase in 2025 and 2026. For 2025, the federal government provides around 174.4 million euros to further boost social housing.
The left -wing parliamentary group in the Saxon state parliament sees further need for action and requires a higher increase in housing subsidies. The city of Leipzig also received a total of 25 million euros in 2023 in order to counteract this challenging topic. The provision of living authorization certificates enables low -income households to apply to apartments of such new buildings, which should promote equal opportunities in the housing market.
