Thomaskirche Leipzig celebrates 25 years - anniversary with a big festival service!

On Pentecost Sunday, June 8, 2025, the Thomaskirche is reminiscent of an important event: its 25th anniversary of the inauguration. This memorable date is celebrated with a festive service at 9:30 a.m., to which the former pastor Christian Wolff will preach. The service is musically designed by the renowned Thomaner choir and the Gewandhaus Orchestra under the direction of Thomas Cantor Andreas Reice. Afterwards the Thomaskirchhof becomes a lively place of encounter where music, information and culinary delights are offered.

The festivities marked the reopening of the Thomas Church after extensive restoration work, which took place from 1997 to 2000 and costs around 10 million euros. Around half of this sum was raised by donations, and the Thomas Church-Bach e.V., founded in 1997, was decisive, which has been tirelessly committed to the preservation of the church since then. The association now has 354 members and continues to seek support and contributions from the community.

Current restoration measures

Although the extensive restoration of 1997 to 2000 had been 25 years ago, further conservation measures are necessary. However, these should not be done to the same extent as the previous work. The focus is currently on the historical entrance doors and the Bach portal. The stonemason work in this area started on March 20, 2025 and are part of a successive restoration of the church interior, which was heralded in autumn 2023. This work was also financed by the Förderverein Thomaskirche-Bach e.V., and the financing of the entire restoration amounts to a total of 190,000 euros, although 50,000 euros are still missing to complete the measures.

The work also includes the repair of plaster damage and a redesign of the inputs to the church and the galleries. Already in 2024 there was an extensive renovation of the areas under the gallery and the entrance area to Burgstrasse. The first important locksmith will follow this year.

a joint commitment

The board of the Thomas Church-Bach e.V. emphasizes the need for permanent care and support for the Thomaskirche. In addition, a "brook bread" is introduced in cooperation with the MacIS organic bakery to promote the preservation, from which 10 % of the sales price flow to the Thomaskirche as a donation. In the past few months, the association has already been able to collect over 8,500 euros through a donation campaign.

In order to continue the comprehensive work and ensure the preservation of the Thomas Church, members and supporters are sought. A donation account has been set up, which can be found at Thomaskirchen-bach e.V. . The commitment of the community and the general public hopes to preserve the tradition and the cultural heritage of the Thomaskirche for future generations.
