Lack of water in the outdoor pool: Ravensburg closes attractions due to drought
In Baden-Württemberg, persistent drought is causing significant problems. There has been too little rain in the region since February 2025, which has already led to alarming water levels in many rivers and lakes. At the Baden-Württemberg State Institute for the Environment, the associated challenges are classified as a novel phenomenon of climate change. High temperatures further exacerbate the situation and lead to excess mortality in the waters.
The natural pond in Ravensburg is particularly affected, where the three-meter diving tower and the popular slide in the Flappachbad were closed for safety reasons. The city administration has so far been unable to provide any information about the current water level in the Flappachweiher. Environment Minister Thekla Walker expressed concern about the developments: “The heat and lack of rain present new challenges for us,” she said recently.
Impact and forecasts
The drought set in early in the year and current forecasts show that the expected thunderstorms cannot be seen as a sustainable solution to the low water situation. Although local flooding due to heavy rain is possible, the overall situation remains tense. In the month of June 2025, only 76 mm of precipitation was recorded, which is only 58 percent of the usual amount.
For the country's waters, this means that out of 100 monitored water levels, 22 have already been classified as being in the preliminary stage of low water. The situation is particularly critical on the rivers: the water level on the Rhine near Karlsruhe was already very high at 25.5 degrees. In addition, 19 of 26 measuring stations recorded record values. The water temperatures are particularly worrying: values of over 28 degrees were measured on the Danube near Immendingen, which significantly increases the risk of fish dying.
Limitations and strategies
Some communities have already implemented restrictions on water use. The paddling pool in the Nessenreben outdoor pool in Weingarten is temporarily closed, not because of the drought, but because of technical problems. In response to the situation, the state government has developed a water shortage strategy for sustainable water use.
In summary, current weather conditions and hydrological measurements show that the challenges for the region are considerable. Efforts to improve the situation are only just beginning.
