Historical trams: Leipzig's special photo trips 2025!

The publisher Imago Urbis in 2025 brings an exciting series of photo channels with historic trams in Leipzig to the tracks. On five dates, photo fans and those interested in history have the opportunity not only to take photographs of rare classic cars, but also to get out at various stops and experience the city from a different perspective. This is done as part of an initiative that underlines the fascinating history of the Leipzig trams.

The first special trip takes place on Sunday, June 22, 2025. It starts at 10:30 a.m. and lasts until 4:00 p.m. The Gotha joint train (built in 1967, car number 1206) is used. This railcar is part of the last series that was delivered to Leipzig from VEB Waggonbau Gotha and was used as a driving school car from 1978 to 1991. Since 1996 it has been part of the museum population of the Leipzig Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB). The route includes stations such as Thekla, Gohlis, Leutzsch, Lindenau and Miltitz.

Another trip is planned for July 27, 2025, this time with the Tatra short-circuit truck 1308. This railcar, part of a zero series from the Czechoslovak manufacturer ČKD Tatra, was released to East Berlin in 1984 and only came back to Leipzig in 1997. The participants will head for the same stations as on the first trip, plus a special driving of the track triangle within the Meyer houses.

tickets cost € 45.00 per person and can be booked via the website special trips.imagourbis.de. A binding registration is required by June 21, 2025 and the number of participants is limited. Payment is made directly on the day of the drive at the conductor.

The importance of the tram museum

Historical trams also have a special place in the Leipzig tram museum. There, visitors can experience the development of the tram in Leipzig up close. The history of the Museumstram began when employees began in the 1920s to secure the first generation railcars to guarantee their preservation. Despite difficult times, including the bomb war and political upheavals, passionate tram fans campaigned for the preservation of these vehicles.

In the result, the first tours with historical vehicles were organized from the 1950s. The 100th anniversary of the tram operation in 1972 brought new impulses, and the first restored car was presented in good time to celebrate the public. Today the collection includes a variety of vehicles, including 20 from regular operation and special exhibits that document the development of the tram in Leipzig.

The cooperation with the Leipzig transport companies and the initiatives of the tram fans are central components of museum activity. The almost complete presentation of the historical development of the trams in Leipzig ensures that visitors can find out more and immerse themselves in the captivating history. More information about the historical vehicles is available on the website of the tram museum at Strassenbahnmuseum.de .
