Women's shelter in need: Difficult search for housing for women in need of protection!

In Germany, finding housing for women fleeing violence is an immense challenge. Women's shelters in particular offer the urgently needed protection and support, but the infrastructural conditions are often inadequate. This makes finding accommodation after a stay in a women's shelter a particularly difficult task.

In 2024, 26 women and 19 children found refuge in the women's shelter in Frankenthal, which is run by the supporting association “Women for Women”. This facility not only provides protection, but also offers an advice center where five dedicated employees hold regular discussions. This advice center is located on Wormser Straße and is an important contact point for those affected. The committed women who work for the well-being of those seeking help include Thekla Goschinak, Brigitte Grohrock, Gisela Werle-Schneider, Magali Leidig-Petermann and Cornelia Wüst.

The need for support

Despite the valuable offerings, resources are limited. The sponsoring association relies on donations to continue its work. Women's shelters are an important part of the differentiated help system in Germany, which not only includes women's shelters, but also women's shelters, specialist advice centers and help hotlines. These services are available to all women affected by violence, regardless of various factors such as age, disability or social status. However, the respective assistance offers vary greatly from region to region, meaning that comprehensive care is not always guaranteed.

A central goal of the assistance system is to protect women from violence and to support them in overcoming the consequences of violence. This ranges from psychological help to social and economic support. However, there are still many challenges to overcome. There is a lack of a uniform legal framework and standard funding for the assistance offered, which makes the situation more difficult for many women affected.

Challenges when looking for accommodation

The housing situation is particularly problematic for women who want to start a new life after their stay in the women's shelter. Due to regional differences in the housing market and a generally tight supply of housing, finding an apartment is extremely difficult. Women who have experienced violence often face additional hurdles that make it difficult for them to find suitable accommodation.

The help system works to ensure that women affected by violence have a legal right to protection and help. It remains to be seen how the need to improve the framework will impact future support for women in emergencies to ensure that no one is lost in the system.
