Shocking accident in Leipzig: cyclists and children injured in collision!
On the afternoon of September 25, 2025, a traffic accident occurred on August-Bebel-Straße in Leipzig-Südvorstadt, in which a 42-year-old cyclist and three children aged 5, 6 and 10 were slightly injured. According to Blick.de, the cyclist was traveling with the children, some of whom were sitting in the bicycle trailer, when the driver of a 57-year-old Mazda tried to parallel park and collided with the cyclist.
All injured people were taken to a hospital for further treatment. The material damage is estimated at around 1,500 euros. As a result of the accident, the police are investigating negligent bodily harm. The officers also suspect that the cyclist's bike may have been tampered with because it was traveling faster than the permitted speed of 25 km/h and did not have an insurance license plate. The vehicle was seized and will be checked by an expert.
Traffic situation in Leipzig
The safety situation for cyclists in Leipzig is tense. Biketrailspfannenstiel.ch points out that the increasing traffic density and the growing population represent challenges for road safety. There have been many accidents involving cyclists in recent years, with the number of cyclists injured increasing from 4,170 in 2019 to 4,500 in 2020.
The urban traffic safety campaign “Leipzig is paying attention” was launched in 2022 to improve safety, especially for cyclists. Leipzig's traffic accident commission has identified 20 accident hotspots in the city, many of them at intersections and junctions. Despite a decrease in the total number of traffic accidents in Saxony in 2020, there remains concern about cycling safety.
Cycling and safety measures
A survey by the ADFC Bicycle Climate Test 2021 shows that 69% of Leipzig residents feel at risk when cycling, indicating growing dissatisfaction with the current cycling situation. To address these problems, the city administration is planning various measures to improve road safety, including the introduction of turning assistants for trucks, which will become mandatory from 2022.
The challenges facing cyclists are complex and require comprehensive solutions to increase safety and promote acceptance of cycling in the city. As the recent accident in Leipzig-Südvorstadt shows, the situation remains tense while the city continues to work on improving the conditions for cyclists.
