Dispute over new school building: Magic garden is in danger of disappearing in Stötteritz!

A new school project is being planned on Kolmstrasse in the city of Stötteritz, for which an amendment to the existing development plan is required. In addition to the school, a new substation is also planned. However, part of the popular “magic garden” is affected, which leads to considerable resistance from the public. In particular, Columbus Junior e.V., which supports the “Zaubergarten”, has spoken out decisively against the plans, as l-iz.de reports.

Development plan No. 444 not only endangers the continued existence of the “magic garden”, but also provides for the sealing of areas that are currently used as a football field, school sports facility and school yard. Matthias Ruß, the specialist guide for the “Magic Garden”, expresses serious concerns in this context. He is particularly concerned about the threat of felling of protected cave trees and the loss of essential infrastructure such as access roads, drinking water connections and workshop space. These losses could have a significant negative impact on nature education work in the facility.

Public participation and residents' fears

The city planning office is aware of the problem, but sees no possibility of sparing the “magic garden”. The authorities emphasize the urgent need for school places, which justifies these measures. Nevertheless, Matthias Ruß would like those affected and residents to be more closely involved in the decision-making process. Citizen participation on development plan No. 444 is currently running until August 21st, in which opinions and comments from citizens can be expressed.

As part of this participation, it is important that people know that their statements and personal data will be stored permanently for legal reasons. Consent to storage is voluntary and can be revoked at any time. The revocation must be made in writing, by telephone or by email to the city planning office. The previous data processing remains unaffected, as explained on the platform for citizen participation of Saxony ([buerger participation.sachsen.de](https://buerger participation.sachsen.de/portal/leipzig/teilig/themen/1054927)).

The concerns of residents and facility managers are particularly relevant given the importance of educational infrastructure and the importance of nature education projects in the region. The focus of the discussion here is balancing the necessary expansion and the preservation of valuable natural habitats.
