German basketball players failed in the European Championship quarter-finals against Belgium!
The adventure of the German basketball players in the European Championship quarter-finals ended on June 26, 2025. The DBB selection, led by player Leonie Fiebich from Landsberg, had to admit defeat to the favored team from Belgium. The match ended 59:83 in favor of the Belgians, who are entering the tournament with the aim of defending their title after becoming European champions in 2023. Belgium, which had won all its games comfortably in the preliminary round, proved to be overpowering and had one of the tournament's strongest players on the field in Emma Meesseman, who scored an average of 18 points per game.
The signs for the game were clear: While Belgium entered the game as the top favorite, Germany took on the role of the underdog. With temperatures reaching up to 35 degrees in Athens, the heat posed an additional challenge. Coach Lisa Thomaidis had warned her team about the outdoor conditions and recommended spending a lot of time in the hotel. After the setback in the quarter-finals, the German team will try to improve its performance in the upcoming placement game against Turkey in order to ultimately reach fifth place and thus make progress compared to last year.
A look at the opponent: Belgium
Belgium presented itself not only as defending champions, but also as one of the strongest teams in Europe. Mike Thibault took over on the sidelines, replacing former coach Rachid Meziane. In addition to Meesseman, Belgium boasts a strong guard duo consisting of Julie Allemand and Julie Vanloo, as well as promising young talents such as Maxuella Lisowa Mbaka. Although Germany had already lost to Belgium in the preliminary round, the team was optimistic. Fiebich emphasized that the team was now in a better position and planned to go into the game with a solid game plan and a lot of energy.
The upcoming placement game against Turkey, which will be an important test for the German team, will take place tomorrow. The aim is to achieve a better placement than at the last European Championship and thus strengthen self-confidence. The DBB selection wants to concentrate on the challenges ahead and learn the lessons from the quarter-finals.
Regarding the last games, it remains to be seen how the German team will react to the defeat and whether they can find the strength to convince against Turkey and achieve a good end to the tournament.
