Swimming accidents in Upper Bavaria: A lifesaver, a missing person!

On June 22, 2025, two tragic swimming accidents occurred in Upper Bavaria, drawing attention to the dangers of swimming and the importance of first aid. The incidents took place on both Lake Lugenausee and Lake Staffelsee.

One of the dramatic events at Lake Lugenause was the case of an 88-year-old man who was found lifeless in the water. An attentive witness noticed the incident at around 9:25 a.m. and immediately alerted passersby who helped with the rescue attempt. A 60-year-old helper pulled the man to shore and began resuscitation measures, supported by several first responders. Thanks to their quick reaction, the man was successfully resuscitated and flown to a hospital in a rescue helicopter. He is now being treated as an inpatient, and initial investigations by the Weilheim criminal police do not indicate any foul play.

Search operation at Staffelsee

Another incident occurred at Lake Staffelsee, where a 79-year-old man from Munich, who was in a pedal boat with a companion, fell into the water and was unable to get back on the boat. Despite his companion's efforts to hold him, the man sank and disappeared without a trace. This led to a large-scale search operation that included divers, boats and a police helicopter. However, the search was unsuccessful until late evening and the man is currently reported missing. Here too, an accident is assumed, with no evidence of foul play.

Such swimming accidents are not uncommon and at least 355 people drowned in Germany in 2022, representing an increase of 56 deaths compared to the previous year. Experts from the German Society for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI) warn that the number of swimming accidents is also increasing this season and emphasize the importance of the correct treatment of lifeless people in the water. Dr. Jan Wnent, an emergency doctor and member of the DGAI, explains that if a lifeless person is found, the emergency number should be called immediately and was advised of the need to look for a lifeguard or ask other bathers for help.

Important tips for first responders

There are clear steps that first responders should follow in such critical situations. After removing the person from the water, it is important to check breathing and, if necessary, start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The DGAI recommends placing the person on their back on a firm surface and beginning resuscitation measures until emergency services arrive. Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and the use of face shields are also recommended to reduce inhibitions in providing assistance.

In addition, it is essential for bathers to follow bathing rules, be aware of their physical abilities and exercise caution in unfamiliar waters. These measures can make a crucial contribution to preventing swimming accidents and minimizing the risk to all swimmers.
