A14 project: Citizen information and construction progress in Wittenberge on June 12th!
Germany's largest new motorway construction project, the A14, is making progress. Construction work is currently concentrating on the section between Seehausen Nord and Wittenberge in the Prignitz. The project is taking shape after construction preparations began in fall 2020 and the groundbreaking for the official start of construction took place on October 16, 2020. The section covers a total of 10.8 kilometers, which is not only crucial for the region, but also closes a significant gap in the German motorway network, as it represents the northern extension from Magdeburg via Wittenberge to Schwerin.
Particularly important is the newly planned Elbe bridge near Wittenberge, which, with a total length of 1,100 meters, is the longest construction of the A 14 northern extension. Bridge construction work is progressing and the new Elbe bridge is scheduled to be completed by 2026. At the same time, the existing Elbe bridge on the B 189 will be rebuilt from 2026. This is part of a comprehensive plan to minimize the impact on nature and the landscape, as the new A14 is being built in sections on the route of the B 189 federal highway. Traffic on the B 189 will remain uninterrupted throughout the construction period.
Citizens' consultation hours and information
In order to inform residents about the progress, a public consultation hour will take place on June 12th at 5 p.m. in the Deges construction office in Wittenberge. Registration is not required and those responsible for the project will provide an overview of the upcoming work and answer individual questions.
The construction measures cover a comprehensive spectrum. In addition to the Elbe Bridge, 18 other bridges and seven bridges in the downstream road network are being built. In addition, noise barriers with a total length of almost five kilometers will be built to protect residents from traffic noise. Environmentally friendly measures are also part of the project: around 900 individual trees will be replanted, three hectares of wooded areas will be created, and habitats will be created for breeding birds and bats.
Progress and outlook
The construction of the foundations and pillars of the Elbe Bridge began in the summer of 2022, and the construction work for the bridge was put out to tender across Europe in May 2021. The contract was awarded in the first quarter of 2022. The complex construction work will be carried out in several phases, including moving the bridge parts across the Elbe.
The new transport routes will not only improve regional connections, but also contribute to economic development in the affected regions of Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The current construction work is already clearly visible along the B189 between Seehausen and Wittenberge.
Overall, it can be seen that the project is progressing with the aim of opening up highway-free regions while at the same time maintaining high standards in terms of nature conservation and quality of life for local residents. The complete completion of the A14 is therefore eagerly awaited.
