Sailing fun on Lake Berzdorf: Over 40 boats in a spectacular regatta!

Next weekend, Lake Berzdorf, also known as “Berzi”, will be the venue for an impressive regatta in which more than 40 sailing boats will take part. The event is organized by the Schönau-Berzdorf sports club in collaboration with partner clubs. The regatta receives particular attention through the use of self-propelled, automatic GPS buoys, which are used for the first time to flexibly mark the regatta course. These high-tech buoys were borrowed from the Saxony Sailing Association on favorable terms and promise to significantly improve the sailing experience.

The regatta is held as a Topcat ranking regatta and attracts participants from Germany and neighboring countries. This international participation underlines the importance of the event. The regatta course will be marked in the southern part of Lake Berzdorf to provide both sailors and spectators with an excellent view of the competition. The regatta is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on Saturday and at 10 a.m. on Sunday. This gives sailors the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in an exciting competition.

Sailing on Lake Berzdorf

The Berzdorfer See, which lies south of Görlitz, has an area of almost 10 square kilometers and offers ideal conditions for sailing sports due to its size and the prevailing wind conditions. The lake was created from a former brown coal opencast mine that was completely flooded. Since 2012, SV Schönau-Berzdorf e.V. has been actively involved in promoting water sports at Lake Berzdorf. In cooperation with the Lausitzer Wassersportfreunde e.V. and ISG Hagenwerder e.V., a sailing base was set up that offers numerous opportunities for sailing in the historic location.

The sailing base's amenities include shore berths for dinghies and catamarans, several club boats as well as sanitary facilities and a lifeboat. In addition, the association also offers training programs for children and young people. The international connections are strengthened, for example, through close cooperation with the Delfin sailing club in Jablonec nad Nisou in the Czech Republic and the KS Turow at the Witka Dam in Poland.

Shared club life and infrastructure

Club life at Berzdorfer See is enriched by joint sailing events, international regattas and barbecue evenings. The infrastructure projects in the region were supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), while additional funds were provided by the German Foundation for Commitment and Volunteering. A multilingual website also makes it easy for those interested to receive information about events and offers.

Current weather information and wind forecasts are available for everyone who wants to watch or sail on Lake Berzdorf at the weekend. The regatta will not only be a highlight for the participants, but also for spectators who want to follow the exciting events on the water.
