Racist insult shocks DFB Cup: game in Leipzig interrupted!

On August 17, 2025, the DFB Cup match between Lok Leipzig and FC Schalke 04 was interrupted due to alleged racist insults against Christopher Antwi-Adjei. In the 12th minute of the match, when Antwi-Adjei wanted to take a throw-in, some Lok Leipzig fans shouted discriminatory remarks. Antwi-Adjei, who was previously lying on the ground after a challenge, responded to the shouts, turned to the fans and informed the assistant referee about his perception of insults from the audience. This led to a discussion between Schalke captain Kenan Karaman and referee Dr. Max Burda.

The situation escalated when the game was stopped for approximately two minutes to respond to the incidents. The stadium spokesman appealed to fans to refrain from making discriminatory shouts. An object was also thrown onto the field. Despite the interruption and the loudspeaker announcement, the game continued after referee Burda and his team noticed no insults.

Reactions and consequences

Lok Leipzig's press spokesman Carsten Maschalle said that the club had inquired but could not find any confirmation of the alleged racist statements. A wheelchair user near the incident also said he didn't hear anything. During the game, Antwi-Adjei was whistled every time he touched the ball, which further inflamed the situation. Maschalle reiterated that racism and discrimination should not be accepted in football.

In a statement, Schalke posted a picture of Antwi-Adjei on Instagram with the hashtag “#STEHAUF against racism!” to show solidarity with the player. While Sky reporters asked for another announcement about the whistles against Antwi-Adjei, Maschalle thought this would be difficult because he again had no confirmation of racist comments and the referee team had not noticed the incidents.

DFB and the three-stage plan

The German Football Association (DFB) provides a clear three-step plan in the event of discriminatory insults. This consists of:

However, the referees must notice racist insults in order to record the incident in the match report or to activate the three-step plan. A similar incident recently occurred at a game between RSV Eintracht and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, where a racist insult was used and a fan was expelled from the stadium. The game ultimately ended with a 1-0 win for Schalke after extra time.
