Rani and Savani: Started a new phase of life in the Munich Zoo!

On May 20, 2025, there was a significant move at Leipzig Zoo: The 15-year-old elephant Rani and her 2-year-old daughter Savani had to move to the Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich due to internal tensions within their herd. According to Leipzig Zoo, the transport went smoothly and both Rani and Savani were able to explore their new quarters at their leisure. Trusted keepers accompanied the elephants and stayed on site for the first few days to provide security (thueringen24.de).

The relocation of Rani and Savani was carried out on the recommendation of the European Endangered Species Program (EEP). In view of increasing tensions between Rani and other elephants, especially the lead cow Kewa and Astra, the decision was made to ensure optimal social integration. The situation was not considered ideal for the herd animals, so Rani and Savani had to be delivered to Munich (zoo-leipzig.de).

New home and settling in

When they arrive in Munich, Rani and Savani find themselves in a new environment consisting of the elephants Otto, Temi, Mangala and Gajendra. The acclimatization takes place carefully and under close observation of the animal care team. According to zoo director Rasem Baban, gentle adaptation is a priority as both Rani and Savani are gradually acclimated to the new Hellabrunner elephant group. In the coming years, the EEP's goal is for Rani and Savani to build their own matriline (zoo-leipzig.de).

According to recent reports, Rani and Savani have settled in well. The keepers at the Leipzig Zoo received positive feedback about the condition of the two animals. The new documentary series “Elephant, Tiger & Co” follows the acclimatization of the two elephants. In episode 1131, which first aired on June 6, 2025, Bull Otto is shown showing interest in Rani while Savani finds new step-siblings in Munich (thueringen24.de).

Family plans and future

The Munich keepers are already expressing their wishes for the future of Rani, who, despite her young age of 15, could have the opportunity to give birth to more young animals. Bull Gajendra's interest in the young elephant was particularly highlighted. There is hope that Rani could become a grandma in a few years when Savani is older (thueringen24.de).

In summary, it can be said that the move of Rani and Savani not only represents a new phase of life for the elephants, but also sets the course for a positive development within the EEP. The coming months and years will offer insightful insights into the lives of the two elephants and their integration into the new herd structure.
