Bitch is eagerly awaiting your owner in the Leipzig animal shelter

Leipzig-Paunsdorf, Deutschland - On Saturday evening, a 64-year-old man handed in a young bitch at the motorway police station in Leipzig-Paunsdorf. According to his description, the bitch almost ran in front of the car shortly before at the intersection Schwantesstraße/Bautzener Straße. The bitch is white and wears a red collar. She is currently waiting for her lawful owner at the Leipzig animal shelter. However, no one had reported to pick up the bitch until Sunday afternoon. The shelter appeals to the owner to report by email or phone if he recognizes his dog. Corresponding documents are required for collection.

The incident throws a light on the current location of the animal shelters in Saxony, which fight with a large number of sudden animals during the holiday season. Michael Sperlich, the head of the animal shelter in Leipzig, reports on a full capacity and a serious problem with aggressive dogs that were purchased during Corona pandemy. These dogs are often difficult to convey, since many owners are unable to deal with their animals. At the moment, 34 to 36 aggressive dogs live in the Leipzig animal shelter, for which only difficult to find owners.

The challenges for animal shelters

The situation is particularly tense in summer because the adoption inquiries go back because many people travel. In addition to Leipzig, animal shelters in Chemnitz and Dresden are also under pressure. In Chemnitz there are many problem dogs and cats that cannot be conveyed. Jens von Lienen, the head of the Chemnitz animal shelter, finds that more pets are usually adopted during the summer vacation, but this year does not apply. 45 cats and 40 dogs are currently living there.

The numbers are alarming: An average of ten dogs per month could be taught before the pandemic, since this number has dropped to only three to four. The increase in pet purchases during pandemic has greatly reduced the need for adoptions. The animal shelter in Dresden has similar trends and is very overloaded, especially in the places for cats and dogs. Kerstin Normann, head of the Veterinary Office, indicates that it needs additional accommodation for cat mums with boys.

The situation illustrates the challenges in front of which animal shelters are in Saxony and makes it clear how important it is to get involved in the adoption of animals. The case of the bitch from Leipzig is only an example in this larger context.
