New cute resident at Leipzig Zoo: Kamala, the red panda, explored!

There is a new resident at Leipzig Zoo: an approximately one-year-old female red panda named Kamala, who has been living in the rear enclosure of the facility since mid-May. Kamala comes from a zoo in France and was first spotted in her outdoor enclosure on June 25, 2023. There she met the crested deer Nicole and Janno, who are her new neighbors. This marks a happy new beginning for the zoo, which was unable to keep red pandas for almost a year after two animals, Lilo and Zimai, died.

There is great joy about Kamala, and there is a possibility that she will soon be joined by a male red panda. The red pandas' enclosure is located in the zoo's high-altitude Himalayan landscape, right next to the snow leopards. The zookeepers have already gotten to know Kamala for some time, which is helping the curious panda settle in.

Kamala explores her new home

Kamala was let into the outdoor facility on the morning of June 25, 2023. At first she was hesitant, but a short time later she began to explore her new territory extensively. Their curiosity is particularly strong, which excites the animal keepers. Favorite foods like cherries and fresh bamboo shoots could help her quickly find her way in her new environment.

Although Kamala will now be visible to zoo guests every day, in the first few days visitors could expect her to occasionally retreat to the back enclosure. Patience is therefore required while the new resident discovers her surroundings and slowly expands her comfort zone.

Leipzig Zoo is optimistic that Kamala's company with another red panda could soon become a reality. This would not only enrich Kamala's life, but also increase the joy of zoo visitors who can experience the rare animals again. Keepers hope Kamala continues to show curiosity and enthusiasm for life as she settles into her new home.
