New sweet resident in the Leipzig Zoo: Kamala, the red panda, explores!

In the Leipzig zoo, there is a new resident: a red panda female named Kamala about a year old, which has lived in the rear enclosure of the facility since mid -May. Kamala comes from a zoo in France and was first spotted in her outdoor enclosure on June 25, 2023. There she met the Schopfhirschen Nicole and Janno, who are their new neighbors. This marks a pleasant fresh start for the zoo, which could not hold red pandas for almost a year after the two animals had died.

The joy of Kamala is great and there is a possibility that this will soon get company from a male red panda. The enclosure of the red pandas is located in the high mountain landscape of Himalaya des Zoo, right next to the snow leopards. The zookeepers have already met Kamala for some time, which benefits the familiarization of the curious pandas.

Kamala explores your new home

KAMALA was left into the outdoor area on the morning of June 25, 2023. At first she hesitated, but a short time later she began to explore her new area extensively. Her curiosity is particularly pronounced, which inspires the zookeepers. Favored foods such as cherries and fresh bamboo businesses could help you quickly find your way around your new environment.

Although Kamala is now visible to zoo guests every day, visitors could stand in the first few days that it occasionally withdraws into the rear enclosure. Patience is therefore required, while the new resident will discover its surroundings and thus slowly expand its comfort zone.

The Leipzig zoo is optimistic that Kamala's society could soon become a reality through another red Panda male. This would not only enrich the life of Kamala, but also increase the joy among zoo seekers, who can again experience the rare animals. The zookeepers hope that Kamala will continue to show curiosity and joie de vivre while she is setting up in her new home.
