New animal wonders at Leipzig Zoo: Offspring bring joy!
Leipzig Zoo will shine in new splendor in spring 2025 and has introduced numerous new animal residents. How Thuringia24 reports, a chimpanzee baby in particular attracts the attention of visitors and contributes to the zoo's popularity. The zoo, which is located on an area of 26 hectares in the Rosental valley northwest of Leipzig city center, is one of the most species-rich zoos in Europe and is home to around 630 different animal species.
The zoo's various themed worlds, including Gondwanaland, Asia, Pongoland, Africa and South America, attract numerous animal lovers every year. In Gondwanaland, guests can experience exciting encounters with over 300 animals, including common squirrel monkeys and giant otters. The new adventure world, whose total costs are forecast at around 66.87 million euros, offers an impressive variety of plants with around 17,000 specimens on 16,500 square meters.
Hopes for offspring in various animal species
The animal keepers at Leipzig Zoo are optimistic about the future and expect several species to have offspring. Particular devotion is given to the Amur leopards, where cat “Kitan” from Rotterdam Zoo moved in about six months ago. The keepers are confident that the pair will reproduce soon. There is also hope for the giant otters: the couple “Nacho”, 10 years old and from Denmark, and “Caria”, who is only 2 years old and was born in the zoo, have shown signs of wanting to mate with each other. Michael Ernst, the animal keeper, expresses confidence that offspring can be expected this year.
The success of the breeding programs at Leipzig Zoo is not only reflected in the Amur leopards. In September 2021 there were already successes in breeding these majestic animals. In one of the well-designed enclosures, which recreates the animals' natural habitat, visitors can experience the special characteristics of the Amur leopards up close.
A diverse offering for visitors
Leipzig Zoo is a popular destination for families and animal lovers. A recommended visit duration of around three hours allows guests to explore the diverse offerings and attractions. The zoo currently employs 260 people who are passionate about the welfare of the animals and offer visitors an unforgettable experience.
The regular MDR programs, such as “Elephant, Tiger and Co.”, which took place on May 16th, provide an insight into the daily work of the zookeepers and the exciting events at the zoo. The combination of species-appropriate husbandry, breeding success and an entertaining range of visits ensure that Leipzig Zoo plays an important role in the areas of animal protection and education and will continue to attract many visitors in the coming years.
