Rheinsberg: Danger averted! Cycle path and water pipes secured
In the region around Rheinsberg, a current construction project has alleviated residents' concerns about drinking and wastewater supplies. How maz online reported that the old railway embankment near Möckern had been badly damaged since February, which posed a major risk to the water pipes in the area. The employees of HTK Wusterhausen have now carried out urgent repairs and secured the subsiding dam.
The mayor of Rheinsberg, Frank-Rudi Schwochow, confirms that the acute danger has now been averted. Construction crews worked to insert a smaller steel pipe into the broken concrete pipe to ensure water flow. This measure became necessary after the original condition of the drinking and sewage pipes became unclear and the bany roots on the site led to soil subsidence.
Repair work and its challenges
The cycle path on the dam, which runs between Möckern and Linow, was closed for months. Workers reported difficulties as cyclists rode across the construction site despite the barriers. A more comprehensive repair of the affected pipes only began in July, five months after the damage was discovered, with costs estimated at around 100,000 euros, which will have to be borne by the city.
Despite the tense situation, Chamberlain Norman Geist was able to reassure that no impact on other budget projects was expected. Additionally, potential savings in straightening unpaved roads could offset unexpected expenses.
Drinking water supply and population awareness
While Rheinsberg is not affected by water shortages, the Drinking and Wastewater Association (TAV) Lindow-Gransee has sensitized the population to use drinking water responsibly. tav-lindow-gransee.de recommends numerous measures to reduce drinking water consumption. This includes the use of water-saving fittings and devices as well as the recommendation not to dispose of paints and varnishes down the drain. These measures are particularly relevant as excessively hot summers and droughts can increase the risk of water shortages.
In order to ensure the best drinking water supply for the future, the population is encouraged to use dishwashing detergent sparingly and to ideally water gardens with service water from cisterns. The TAV continuously provides information about the importance of using water responsibly in order to prevent bottlenecks and preserve the resource for future generations.
