On July 2, 2025, a major fire was extinguished along the railway line between Schönebeck and Calbe in the Salzland district. According to a spokesman for the rescue control center and Deutsche Bahn, the fire area covered around 30 hectares, while other reports mention an area of around 24 hectares. MDR reported blazing flames and meter-high columns of smoke that were visible and documented on videos.
Around 250 firefighters were deployed to fight the fire, which was believed to have been started by a train. The hot temperatures and strong sunlight made fighting the fire much more difficult. Some firefighters required medical treatment due to the heat. Despite the challenges, emergency services were able to prevent the fire from spreading and combat embers. n-tv reported that a sewage treatment plant near Calbe was also threatened and additional support was provided by the Technical Relief Agency (THW) and fire engines from the fire department and the agricultural cooperative.
Impairments in rail traffic
The fire also had an impact on rail traffic between Magdeburg and Halle. Parts of the route were temporarily closed. However, late in the evening, at 8:44 p.m., the route was reopened. Extinguishing measures and constant monitoring of the fire site were necessary to prevent the fire from breaking out again.
