Leipzig plans 16 new toilets: better service for everyone!

Lützschena-Stahmeln, Deutschland - The city of Leipzig is still faced with a tense budget situation that also affects the planning and operation of public toilets. Despite the current financial challenges, however, the city council has decided to significantly improve the public sanitary infrastructure. By the end of 2026, a total of 16 new toilets at strategic locations will be built, which are launched with the aim of supplementing the 20 sanitary facilities in the urban area. According to lvz Sanitary facilities are taken over by the Leipzig city cleaning, while the existing toilets are currently managed by RBL Media GmbH.

A central concern of the citizens in Leipzig is free access to these facilities. While the current toilets cost 50 cents, the new systems should be free of charge for users. This was underpinned in particular by the demands of the senior advisory board and results from citizens' surveys, which require an increase in the number of toilets. The community budget 2024 put the topic of public toilets in the first place, which illustrates the urgency of the problem.

planned locations and infrastructure

The new toilets are planned

, among others at the main train station, the market square, in the Lene-Voigt-Park, Rabet district park, Clara-Zetkin-Park, as well as in the Rosental and in other places. This toilet concept was already decided by the city council in 2018, and Mayor Heiko Rosenthal presented the details of the same in November 2023. One goal of this concept is to make the sanitary facilities barrier -free and semi -stationary in order to meet the demands of a wide user.

For the implementation of the first concept of concept, around 1.6 million euros are planned, which also include the recruitment of six new employees for city cleaning. Up to 20 cooperation contracts with external partners should also contribute to improving public toilets. According to analyzes, the need for further sanitary facilities is particularly high in summer, which is why the quickest possible implementation of the concept is required.

social aspects and women's rights

Marsha Richarz from the Greens emphasizes how important public toilets are for women, especially for menstruating people. This view is supported by the senior advisory board, which also addresses the special needs of older people in connection with often required toilets. The coordinator for public sanitary facilities, Marco Schlütter, emphasizes that the operation of public toilets is not required by law, which makes the efforts all the more important.

The approval of the double budget 2025/26 by the State Directorate Saxony is crucial for the implementation of the project. Leipzig is faced with the challenge of not only expanding its public infrastructure, but also ensuring that it meets the needs of all citizens. While the city is pursuing a solution for its toilet concept, it remains to be seen which further measures are taken to master the financial and infrastructural challenges.
