Today, August 19, 2025, a serious accident occurred in Leipzig-Lößnig on Tuesday afternoon. A tram on line 16 collided with a silver Skoda at the intersection near fire and rescue station 4. The driver overlooked the approaching tram when turning onto Zwickauer Straße, which led to a direct collision. As a result of the accident, three passengers on the tram were slightly injured. It is currently unclear whether the occupants of the car also sustained injuries. The traffic disruption caused by the accident lasted around 50 minutes, as lvz.de reported.
Another, similar incident also occurred on Tuesday in Leipzig's center-west, when a 58-year-old driver of an Audi was driving into the city on Möckernschen Allee. While turning at the Waldstrasse intersection, she overlooked an approaching tram, which led to a violent collision. The car was dragged for several meters and ultimately came to a stop on a lamppost. The driver was trapped in the vehicle and also suffered minor injuries. The fire department had to free her from the car. According to the first estimate, the material damage amounts to around 55,000 euros. Here, too, there were temporary closures of the Waldstrasse and the tram lines while the accident was being recorded, as tag24.de reported.
Accident investigations and traffic disruptions
The police received the first report of the accident in Lößnig at 4:38 p.m. In both cases it quickly became clear that overlooking trams could lead to serious accidents. Vehicles near tram tracks require special attention. The investigation is ongoing in order to fully clarify the circumstances and the exact course of the accidents.
These incidents highlight the risks in urban traffic and the need to be vigilant at all times, both as drivers and pedestrians. Especially in an urban environment like Leipzig, where trams run frequently, such collisions are not only dangerous, but also extremely stressful for traffic.
