Commemoration of the Battle of the Nations: Liebertwolkwitz becomes a journey back in time to 1813!

The past comes to life in the Leipzig district of Liebertwolkwitz: from October 17th to 19th, 2025, the village will be transformed into an authentic setting of the early 19th century. The event, titled “Liebertwolkwitz – a Village in 1813,” commemorates the Battle of the Nations of 1813, a significant conflict that influenced the fate of Europe. The Stiftsgut Liebertwolkwitz court cooperative and the Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig 1813 e.V. interest group are the organizers of this unique historical production, supported by numerous associations and initiatives.

Over 1,000 participants from across Europe, including groups from France, Poland, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Belgium, will take part in the celebrations. Craftsmen such as rope makers, blacksmiths, belt makers and salt makers present their traditional skills. The primary school children also take an active part in the event by performing historical games. A boys' choir will sing old songs while visitors have the opportunity to learn old German script.

An authentic experience for the whole family

A highlight of the event is the reenactment of the Battle of the Nations, which will take place on Saturday on the Grundwiesen in Liebertwolkwitz. The honorary battle display, which begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, depicts the decisive battles in which troops from Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden defeated Napoleon Bonaparte. Historically, the largest cavalry battle took place in this region on October 14, 1813, which led to the destruction of the village.

There is an extensive program for the little guests: horse riding, crafts, fairy tale readings and a puppet theater are on the agenda. In addition, a diverse range of gastronomic offerings in taverns, pubs and dive bars ensure the physical well-being of visitors. The event aims to act as edutainment through a combination of entertainment and historical content and appeal to families and history buffs.
