New artificial turf for TuS Leutzsch: sports field ceremoniously inaugurated!
After a year of construction has passed, the new artificial turf pitch at TuS Leutzsch was ceremoniously inaugurated. On August 10, 2025, Leipzig's sports mayor Heiko Rosenthal handed over the new surface to the club president Kai Hebestreit and the technical director Bryan Sura. This important project was realized with a total cost of 1.72 million euros, with the Free State of Saxony, the city of Leipzig and the club itself contributing to the financing. The breakdown of the costs is as follows: 876,000 euros from the state, 703,000 euros from the city and 138,000 euros from the club.
The conversion of the large natural grass field in need of renovation into a modern artificial turf pitch not only includes the new surface. The project also included the installation of a ball catch system and an LED floodlight system. In addition, the old cinder track was replaced by a modern synthetic track. This new facility now offers a 320 meter running track with two lanes and a sprint track with four lanes.
Environmentally friendly measures
The project particularly emphasized the consideration of environmental and climate protection. Insect-friendly LED floodlights are used and infiltration basins have been set up as a humid biotope. The artificial turf comes from the DOMO company and is climate neutral, which further strengthens the sustainability of the project. New plantings should also contribute to improving the ecological balance.
A key advantage of the new sports grounds is the almost complete retention of surface water during heavy rain. This is fed into a ditch with a time delay, which creates additional benefits for the surrounding area.
Association in the community
TuS Leutzsch has a total of 244 members, including 76 children and young people and 168 adults. The members are divided into five men's and nine junior teams as well as a women's team in competitions. This large number of active sports fans particularly benefited from the renovation work, which became necessary, among other things, because the club had to struggle with mud and mud on the sports field in the winter months. Regular training for around 300 club members and students from four Leipzig schools was impossible for six months and had to be temporarily relocated to surrounding sports halls.
To finance the planned renovation, which includes not only the artificial turf pitch, but also a surrounding tartan track, a diving pit and a shot put facility, the club needed equity capital of 80,000 euros. In order to raise this amount, TuS Leutzsch has started a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe. Both the city of Leipzig and the Free State of Saxony will provide support through funding to successfully complete the project.
With the inauguration of the new artificial turf pitch and the associated modernizations, TuS Leutzsch is ideally positioned to meet the long-term needs of its large membership base and community.
