Leipzig's schools in new splendor: Equely operating should revolutionize cleaning!

Leipzig, Deutschland - On June 29, 2025, the left group was discussed in the Leipzig city council to establish a self -operation for cleaning schools and daycare centers. The aim of this application is to improve cleaning quality and reduce complaints about current conditions. Already on June 25th the first discussion took place in the council meeting, in which various points of view were presented on this topic.

The CDU city councils expressed their concerns about the effectiveness and costs of such a own operation during the session. They pointed out that the cleaning staff had to be paid according to the public service tariff, which would result in higher costs. The cleaning performance is currently carried out by public tenders in which numerous local cleaning companies take part. This practice is considered more effective and economical by many city councils.

Discussion about conditions of tender

The left faction's application initially represents a test order. The exam should be completed by March 2026, with Karsten Albrecht from the CDU stimulated a longer period until June 2026. In this context, the Office for School warned of the high work efforts and potential additional costs that could bring its own operation. An alternative that the administration is considering is the provision of cleaning services via a municipal GmbH that would be 100 % in urban property. The administration evaluates the idea of a complete own company as organizationally and economically ambitious.

combined models in view

A possible compromise that was proposed during the discussion provides for a hybrid model. This would include pilot areas on their own and the inclusion of external capacities in order to increase cleaning quality without taking into account the financial risks of complete operations. The test result, which is expected in spring 2026, could be pioneering for the future strategy of the city of Leipzig in the field of school and kitarinization.

The changed conditions of tender are also important in the context of past public tenders for cleaning schools in Leipzig. The CPV code 90919300-5 is relevant. An advertisement on these tenders was published on May 11, 2022, but the content is no longer available, as more than four years have passed since the publication. Nevertheless, earlier tenders also show how important the organization of cleaning performance is for Leipzig's educational institutions.

Overall, the city council meeting revealed a variety of opinions, and while some city councilors advocate a radical change, others are gradually improving the current cleaning structures. The decision as to how cleaning will be organized in the future is still imminent and is eagerly awaited.
