Shock in Leipzig: Tram derails after colliding with truck!

On September 19, 2025, a serious accident occurred in the Heiterblick district, in which a line 3 tram collided with a truck. The incident happened at the intersection of Torgauer Strasse and Leupoldstrasse when a 57-year-old Ukrainian truck driver ignored a red light while turning right. The impact was so violent that the front part of the tram derailed. A 37-year-old passenger on the tram was injured and had to be treated on an outpatient basis. Day24 reports that The investigation was initiated against the truck driver on suspicion of negligent bodily harm.

As a result of the accident, there were significant disruptions to local public transport operated by the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB). Diversions for trams in both directions between Torgauer Platz and Portitzer Allee were set up, and a rail replacement service (SEV 3) was set up between Sellerhausen and Paunsdorf-Nord. This runs over the Bülowviertel and along Torgauer Straße. The SEV runs from Emmausstrasse via Annenstrasse, Torgauer Platz, Torgauer Strasse to Portitzer Allee and finally to the Heiterblick S-Bahn station before reaching the Paunsdorf-Nord terminus. The transfer option between line 3 and the SEV is at Annenstrasse. In the evenings and early weekend traffic, the SEV will run to Taucha instead of the tram. L-Online reports that these measures are necessary due to the accident.

Impact on traffic

The accident and the subsequent diversions result in some necessary adjustments for LVB passengers. The transport company recommends finding out about possible changes to the timetable before traveling in order to avoid possible waiting times. The diversions affect both trams and buses, which may affect the overall traffic flow in the area.

Authorities are working closely to advance the investigation and ensure a safe traffic environment. The LVB will take all necessary steps to keep the impact on public transport as low as possible and to provide passengers with timely information.

It remains to be seen to what extent the accident will lead to long-term changes in traffic management, especially at a busy intersection like Torgauer Straße/Leupoldstraße.
