The incredible mini treasure: 2200 year old coin discovered in Leipzig-Gundorf!
A sensational find was made in Leipzig-Gundorf: a 2,200-year-old mini-treasure, discovered by hobby detectorist Daniel Fest in July, is causing excitement in the archeology community. The coin, which is smaller than a 1 cent piece and weighs only two grams, is considered the oldest known coin in Saxony. When it was examined by the State Office of Archeology in Dresden, it was determined that it was a quarter-stater, the front of which shows an animal head with pronounced eyes, horns and a humped forehead.
Special attention is also paid to the reverse of the coin, which features an open ring with thickened ends and a characteristic star with rounded corners. Comparable coins that come from the northern Bohemian Celtic settlement area date to the 3rd century BC. Culture Minister Barbara Klepsch praised the cooperation between the detectorists and the Saxony State Office for Archeology and emphasized the importance of such finds for the region's cultural heritage. The presentation of the find took place on Monday.
Valuable insights into history
The find not only has archaeological significance, but also raises new questions about the history of the region. Such discoveries are important for better understanding the trade and cultural connections in ancient Saxony. The mini-treasure could provide information about how Celtic societies were organized and which trade routes they used.
In addition to this historic find, there are efforts to further intensify the exchange and collaboration between amateur detectorists and professional archaeologists. Finds like the one in Leipzig-Gundorf are important not only for experts, but also for the general public, who are increasingly showing interest in archaeology.
