Large construction site in Leipzig: Karl-Liebknecht-Straße closed from June 28th!
Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, 04107 Leipzig, Deutschland - From June 28, 2023, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße in Leipzig will become a large construction site in Leipzig. The construction work in this central section of the city lasts until mid -October 2023 and cost around six million euros. Several institutions are involved in the work, including the city of Leipzig, the waterworks, the transport companies and Netz Leipzig, which together promote comprehensive renovation in this area. This brings numerous restrictions on traffic and residents who can affect the quality of life in the area.
During the construction work, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße will be closed to through traffic until the end of September 2023. Tram lines 10 and 11 are also affected during this period and do not drive in this area. The gastronomy in the neighborhood must adapt to restrictions caused by the construction activities. The planned work includes the renewal of track systems at 550 meters and the exchange of drinking water pipes over a distance of 430 meters.
Scope of construction activities and restrictions
The construction work also includes the renovation of 164 meters of sewers and 90 sewage house connection lines, while the gas deficiency pressure line is replaced in the intersection to Schenkendorfstrasse. Furthermore, medium-voltage cables are relocated between Schenkendorfstraße and Kochstrasse. In order to increase traffic safety, the blind guidance system at the Südplatz and Kurt-Eisner-Straße stops is improved and the cycle path guide is optimized.
For through traffic, a detour via August-Bebel-Straße is set up out of town and via Richard-Lehmann-/Prager Straße. From the end of July 2023, further closures on Schenkendorfstrasse from the direction of Bernhard-Göring-Straße and Kochstraße will also be planned for three weeks. From mid-August 2023, restrictions for residents in Alfred-Kästner-Straße between Kochstraße and Karl-Liebknecht-Straße will be planned for three and a half weeks.
Additional major construction site from 2025
In addition to the current work, another large construction site on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße will be planned from May 2025. This affects a distance of around 500 meters between Körnerstrasse and Kurt-Eisner-Straße and is scheduled to last until the end of October 2025. The focus of this work is on the renewal of drinking water and sewage pipes and the tracks to ensure a future-proof tram operation. Here, too, numerous restrictions on traffic and access options for cars can be expected.
From the end of June 2025, a full blockage of tram traffic will also follow for three months, lines 10 and 11 are affected. This will result in further detours and timetable changes, the details of which will be published at a later date. Despite the extensive construction work, it is planned that residential traffic is usually maintained, so that the houses, apartments and shops can still be reached on foot.
These comprehensive measures are necessary to modernize the infrastructure in Leipzig and increase traffic safety. The potential impairments for residents and road users are part of the huge project, which ultimately benefits the entire city.
