Gondwana Land in Leipzig: A jungle paradise for millions of visitors!
Leipzig Zoo proudly presents its Gondwana Land, which is designed as a paradisiacal jungle. This impressive tropical adventure world opened on July 1, 2011 and has since attracted millions of visitors. The unique attraction is home to around 170 species of animals and more than 24,000 tropical plants arranged in a natural setting. Highlights include a 90-meter-long treetop walk and an 11-minute boat ride on the 360-meter-long Gamanil jungle river. The aim of this impressive environment is to sensitize visitors to the complex rainforest ecosystem and its inhabitants that deserve protection.
In Gondwana Land, the animal keepers take care of the animals' needs every day. Gardeners are also on duty to look after the blooming plants. A major daily activity is pruning the treetops to create more light for the lower plants. During this important measure, care is taken to check possible bird nests in the treetops before cutting so as not to get in the way of the birds during the breeding season. Christine Anger explains that the lower plants need more light, and Michael Ernst adds that the trees recover quickly and sprout again after cutting.
An anniversary with an opportunity to look back
On the occasion of Gondwana-Land's tenth anniversary, the focus is also on the impressive breeding successes. The success stories include the breeding of spotted quolls, of which over 150 animals were bred in Leipzig. These have established themselves in several zoos in Europe. The zookeepers at Leipzig Zoo also share their favorite places in the hall to give visitors a new insight into this fascinating ecosystem. Leipzig Zoo reports that the hall is now home to 20 mammal, 15 reptile, 25 bird and 16 amphibian species.
Investments in Gondwana Land amount to almost 70 million euros, which underlines the enormous value that Leipzig Zoo places on species protection and education. The documentary soap “Elephant, Tiger and Co.”, which documents the work at the zoo, shows viewers the daily effort of the employees. The articulated lifting platform, which is used to care for the treetops, also plays a crucial role and shows the zoo's modern approach to animal and plant care.
The combination of animal diversity, botanical splendor and dedicated care makes Gondwana Land a unique experience. Thuringia24 emphasizes that the annual care measures lead to exciting moments among the animals, especially in the spring, when they are distracted by the blossoming of nature.
With Gondwana Land, Leipzig Zoo has not only created a place for visitors to relax, but has also made a significant contribution to species protection and environmental education. The established outdoor walkers in the hall have also integrated perfectly into the ecosystem and contribute to the naturalness of the experience.
