On Tuesday morning there was a significant police stop at a local late-night shop on Leipziger Eisenbahnstrasse. During this commercial operation, officers found several bags containing a white substance and cannabis. As a result of this discovery, an investigating judge ordered a search of the premises after prior consultation with the public prosecutor's office and the Leipzig district court. Additional narcotics and tablets were also seized during the search. The criminal police have now started investigations into trafficking in narcotics. This raid is part of a broader problem that is currently affecting Leipzig in the area of drugs. Current figures from the 2023 addiction report show that a total of 4,229 treatment cases were cared for in the city's nine addiction counseling and treatment centers, which corresponds to a slight increase compared to the previous year. Particularly alarming is the increase in cannabis addiction treatment, which has increased from 569 to 636 cases. The number of alcohol problems also increased to 1,610 cases, which accounts for 43.4% of the treatment cases. Increasing preventative measures
To counteract this problem, the city of Leipzig has supported various youth protection projects, which reached 3,925 children and young people this year. In addition, the police department organized 142 prevention events in which 2,960 students, 269 educators and 334 parents took part, doubling the number of participants compared to the previous year. However, there are concerns about the ongoing debates about the possible release of cannabis, which may lead to false expectations among young people about access.
The challenges in combating drug abuse are not only epidemiological but also require a coordinated community effort. According to the data from the addiction report, it shows that addiction to opioids also makes up a significant proportion, although the cases here fell from 404 in the previous year to 363. These developments illustrate the need for further strategies and measures to prevent addiction and combat drug abuse in Leipzig.
