Cyclist slightly injured after accident in Leipzig – police are investigating!
On Tuesday afternoon there was an accident in Leipzig-Engelsdorf in which a cyclist was slightly injured. The incident occurred around 1:50 p.m. at the intersection of Riesaer Strasse and Bergahornstrasse/Gartenstrasse. The exact course of the collision between a car and the cyclist is currently unclear, and the police have started an investigation to clarify the circumstances. The cyclist fell onto the road in the accident, but no further information about the damage caused was released.
The accident sheds light on the increasing challenges cyclists face on the road. According to a study by insurers' accident research (UDV), cyclists are becoming more and more likely to have accidents without external influence, especially in the winter months. In 2023, almost 27,400 cycling accidents without anyone else involved were registered, in which around 6,400 people were seriously injured and 147 were fatally injured. Statistically speaking, collisions between bikes and cars lead to an even more serious outcome, with 5,112 seriously injured and 178 dead.
Causes of accidents and infrastructure problems
The causes of these accidents are often due to weather conditions and infrastructure. The UDV reports that almost one in three solo accidents can be attributed to inadequate driving conditions. Cyclists are increasingly demanding improvements, particularly the removal of curbs at crossings and sufficient distance from tram tracks to prevent fall-related accidents. Kirstin Zeidler, head of the UDV, emphasizes that most crashes happen between December and February, when wet, ice, snow and leaves make driving conditions worse.
The popularity of cycling has increased in recent years, particularly among older people, but this has also led to an increase in accidents. Almost two thirds of the cyclists affected say that their own driving style played a role in their accident. Almost every third person who had a solo accident was driving too fast in a situation. In addition, accidents with Pedelecs, which are heavier and accelerate faster, often lead to more serious injuries than accidents with conventional bicycles.
Given this development, cyclist safety remains an important challenge for urban planning and transport policy in Leipzig and beyond.
