Mayor invites you: tour for better foot traffic in Connewitz!
On October 17, 2025, Mayor Burkhard Jung invites all interested citizens to take a tour of Connewitz. The event will take place on October 22nd and focuses on pedestrian traffic in Leipzig. The tour will begin at 4 p.m. at the “Connewitzer Spitze” park at Connewitzer Kreuz and will last around two hours. The route includes important streets such as Wolfgang-Heinze-Straße, Selnecker Straße, Kochstraße as well as Gustav-Freytag-Straße and Karl-Liebknecht-Straße. The focus is on the pedestrian situation, with a focus on crossing options, a 30 km/h zone, blocked intersections and the design of the city square. This initiative is carried out in collaboration with Fuss e. V. and the Ökolöwe e. V. carried out to strengthen and address the concerns of pedestrians. The L-IZ reports that…
Mayor Jung had already organized a public consultation on the topic of pedestrian traffic in September 2024, which marked the start of the European Mobility Week in Leipzig. This event focused on the situation for pedestrians in Reudnitz, where the Ostplatz was described as particularly problematic. There were specific demands to include this square in the Leipzig city square program 2030+. Theresa Gnoyke from the city planning office confirmed that the Ostplatz has a high priority in the plans. Citizen participation in Ostplatz is planned for 2025, with a partial renovation in 2026. Eco lion explains that...
Specific challenges in foot traffic
Citizens also expressed concerns about the sidewalks on Prager Straße, which are perceived as too narrow. Conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists can be observed here increasingly. One suggestion is to designate the sidewalk on Prager Straße as such and to shift bicycle traffic onto the street. The transport office has also carried out traffic counts and recognized the need for action, but short-term solutions are not yet in sight.
Another problem is the oversized junction at Harnackplatz, which leads to long crossings for pedestrians. The proposal to reduce these crossing distances includes the introduction of a sidewalk nose. A zebra crossing across Eilenburger Straße was also called for, which was approved by OBM Jung.
Future developments in urban design
In the popular Lene Voigt Park, conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists are also increasing. Against this background, proposals were formulated to designate Reichpietschstrasse and Eilenburger Strasse as bicycle streets. In addition, the aim is to renovate the sidewalks in Lene-Voigt-Park. The demands also gave impetus to new bus routes, while barrier-free bus stops at Reudnitzer Park and Augustenstrasse are planned by 2026.
A proposal to redesign Dresdner Straße, which is planned as the new town center of Reudnitz, illustrates the views of many citizens regarding improving the infrastructure and urban design in Leipzig. OBM Jung emphasized the need for new approaches for this town center and noted that the tour was described as successful in this context. Further events are already being planned to continue the discussion about mobility issues in the city. These developments are part of a comprehensive process in which citizens should be actively involved in order to be able to submit their suggestions by September 23, 2024.
