Large project started: Georg-Schwarz-Brücken will be renewed until 2028!
On September 29, 2025, the urgent renewal of the Georg-Schwarz-Brücken between Leutzsch and Böhlitz-Ehrenberg begins. This measure marks the start of a comprehensive construction project that will take a total of six years and is associated with an investment volume of around 100 million euros Leipziger Internet Zeitung reported.
In order to ensure construction freedom, the demolition of several empty buildings and the felling of trees are necessary. In addition, renovations of the road covers are planned in the adjacent side streets such as the Lise-Meitner-, Burgauenstraße and on the Luppe. To ensure pedestrian and cyclists access, a makeshift bridge over the street on the Ritterschlößchen is built.
Traffic measures and accessibility
In the first phase, maintenance and preparatory work is to be completed, which will extend by January 2026. From this point on, a barrier-free access to the bridge will be offered, first to the long-distance track climbing of the Deutsche Bahn, followed by the S-Bahn access from March 2026. The traffic in the construction area is expected to be preserved over the old bridges until 2028. A detour via Merseburger Straße and Schönauer Landstrasse will be set up for through traffic.
To improve the turning situation, a temporary traffic light at the confluence of the Schönauer Landstrasse on Merseburger Strasse is also installed. However, public transport users have to adapt to changes: The “S-Bahnhof-Leutzsch” stop will no longer be served from October 1, 2025. Alternatives are the stops "Philipp-Reiß-Straße" or "Barnecker Straße".
Innovative construction concepts in practice
In parallel to this extensive project, the topic of bridge construction is also being discussed nationally. Civil engineer Theo Reddemann has developed an innovative modular system for bridges that significantly shortens the construction times. With this system, a bridge on a motorway junction in Münster could be completely rebuilt within just seven weeks, while 1.5 years were originally estimated. Reddemann emphasizes that his method not only reduces up to two thirds on site, but also significantly lowers CO2 emissions. It is estimated that many bridges will have to be renewed in Germany over the next 20 years, including 8,000 motorway, 3,000 federal roads and 1,200 railway bridges.
So far, public contracts have been given primarily according to costs, although speed aspects and CO2 savings have often not been taken into account. However, this could change with the first public tender, which took place at the end of December 2024 and was weighted at 50% at speed. Reddemann plans to award licenses for his express building patent in order to further increase the construction speed without leading to higher costs.
