Car thieves strike again: five cars stolen in Leipzig!
The police in Leipzig are currently investigating the serious theft of five vehicles from different parts of the city. According to the reports, the total damage caused by these acts is LVZ around 91,000 euros.
Among the stolen vehicles is a 30-year-old, white VW Polo that was stolen in Liebertwolkwitz between September 6th and 17th. The perpetrators cut through the tarpaulin to gain access to the construction site where the car was parked. In this context, various tools were also stolen, causing further damage of around 7,000 euros.
Thieves' varied approaches
A gray VW Golf worth 10,000 euros was stolen on Wednesday. The vehicle was parked in a parking lot belonging to an allotment association and was properly locked. There were three more thefts on Wednesday night: a brown Toyota Land Cruiser in Schönefeld-Ost was stolen for around 50,000 euros, a gray Toyota C-HR in Dölitz-Dösen for 22,000 euros and a green VW Golf in Mockau-Süd for just 2,000 euros. The latter car was stolen along with money from a single-family home, with the perpetrators breaking in using a front door key stuck from the outside.
However, the series of thefts in Leipzig have a background that... Saxon illuminated. In Saxony there was a general decrease in thefts of comprehensively insured cars in 2024. While a higher number was reported in 2023, the number of stolen vehicles fell to 587 in 2024. The total damage from thefts was around 11.7 million euros.
Strongholds of car theft
However, the number of car thefts in Saxony shows that Leipzig and Dresden continue to be strongholds. In Leipzig, six thefts were counted for every 10,000 cars with comprehensive insurance, and in Dresden there were five. Despite the decline, the value of stolen cars has increased by about five percent. This is a cause for concern as insurers had to pay out an average of 19,900 euros per theft.
Current events make it clear that the problem of car theft in urban areas like Leipzig must be taken seriously. Police are urging people to be vigilant and report suspicious activity around parked vehicles.
