Rescuers in the Elbe: Brave passers-by save drivers from hypothermia!
In a dramatic operation on Wilhelm-Weitling-Straße in Zschieren, the fire brigade and rescue service had to react quickly on November 10, 2025, between 7:41 p.m. and 10:02 p.m. Alerted by the emergency call “Person in Elbe”, the emergency services found a badly damaged vehicle that was partially submerged in the water of the Elbe. Thanks to the courageous efforts of two passers-by, the driver was rescued from the car before the fire department arrived and was taken to hospital as quickly as possible with suspected hypothermia.
The fire department arrived with a comprehensive team of 48 emergency services. Since the site was in tight quarters, a special equipment truck with a winch was requested to safely rescue the vehicle from the water. A rescue swimmer finally attached a round sling to the car so that it could be pulled out with the electric winch and parked securely. The water police took over all further measures when the fire department completed the operation.
