Fraud and chaos: fake bank employees and serious accidents in Leipzig!

On September 3, 2025, the Leipziger Internet Zeitung reported on several incidents that have affected the region in the last few days. These include a serious traffic accident, fraudulent dealings with credit cards and an attempted break-in in Leipzig as well as an interruption in a regional league game.

On August 30th, a case of Credit card fraud in Borna. A 25-year-old man noticed unexplained debits from his account that resulted in hotel room bookings in Düsseldorf. At the request of the Leipzig public prosecutor's office, the police searched the hotel and found a 55-year-old woman and four men between the ages of 31 and 38 who were of Nigerian origin. During the search, fake identification documents and electronic devices were seized. The probable financial loss amounts to several hundred euros and an investigation into computer fraud has been initiated.

Serious traffic accident and burglary in Leipzig

Another incident occurred on September 2nd in Leipzig, when a 51-year-old Pedelec rider was seriously injured in a traffic accident. A 57-year-old truck driver overlooked the Pedelec driver when turning. The accident occurred at 11:30 a.m. and the cyclist was taken to hospital for treatment. The property damage is estimated at around 5,000 euros and the police have started an investigation into negligent bodily harm.

Early on the morning of September 3rd, around 1:00 a.m., a 32-year-old man was caught red-handed attempting to break into a supermarket in Leipzig. The alarm led the police to the scene. The suspect's alcohol test showed a level of over one per mille, while the damage to the supermarket is estimated at around 3,500 euros. The investigation into attempted particularly serious theft is ongoing here.

Game interruption and cheating warning

A special situation also occurred on September 2nd during a regional league game between BSG Chemie Leipzig and 1. FC Carl Zeiss Jena. The game was interrupted between 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. due to pyrotechnics and the appearance of masked people. The police discovered several violations and will file charges of attempted grievous bodily harm.

Finally, the police are warning about fraudsters who pose as bank employees to con unsuspecting consumers out of their money. A 59-year-old man from Delitzsch fell for such a scam and willingly handed over 10,000 euros to a caller who posed as a bank employee. The police have also launched an investigation into this case and advise citizens to be vigilant.
