Leipzig's new residential project: 202 apartments for everyone!
Johannisallee, 04103 Leipzig, Deutschland - In Leipzig, a significant new building project of the Leipzig Wohnungs- und Baugesellschaft (LWB) is currently being realized. On May 23, 2025, the foundation stone for 202 new apartments was laid in Johannisallee. This construction project comprises nine apartment buildings with different sizes one to five-room apartments as well as two commercial units and rooms for neighborhood work. Over half of the apartments are funded as part of the "Tied rental housing" of the Free State of Saxony, whereby 104 of the total of 202 apartments being offered at a cold rental price of 6.50 euros. From mid -2027 the first tenants should move into the new rooms.
The new construction project in Johannisallee is designed in such a way that it forms a unit harmoniously with the surrounding Hochwäusern of the LWB. Sustainable measures are a central part of the project; This includes the greening of roof surfaces and the integration of photovoltaic systems. Ecological accompanying measures also take place to protect older existing trees. The Free State of Saxony supported the project with six million euros.
Other projects of the LWB
In the immediate vice connection with the construction of the new apartments, there are several other LWB projects that are about to be completed. These projects include:
- Collection Lampel-Straße: 100 subsidized apartments
- Robert-Schumann-Straße: 104 apartments, half funded
- Shakespearestrasse: 65 apartments, half funded
- Mockauer / Kieler Straße: 80 senior citizens' apartments
In addition, two other new construction projects on Essener Straße with 121 apartments and on Plovdiver Straße with around 50 apartments in serial construction are scheduled for this year.
promotion and combating the housing shortage
The support of the Free State of Saxony for housing is unbroken. In another new building project in Mockau, State Secretary Barbara Meyer laid the foundation for 100 new social housing a few months ago, which is expected to be completed in August 2025. The project comprises 5- and 7-storey buildings with estimated construction costs of around 28.1 million euros, with 5.1 million euros being provided from the program for bound rental housing. In this context, the city of Leipzig received a total of 25 million euros for similar projects from this funding pot in 2023.
Since 2018, more than 130 million euros have been approved in Saxony via the guideline for bound rental housing, which has led to the creation or under construction. Funding is oriented towards communities with a tense housing market such as Leipzig, Dresden and Großpösna, with the aim of giving low -income households access to living space. Applications for funding can be made if the living space for at least 15 to a maximum of 20 years is left to authorized tenants for reduced rents.
The support on the part of the state government is reflected in a desired increase in funds for the promotion of inexpensive rental housing, from 96 million euros in 2023 to up to 124 million euros in 2024. This is intended to help combat the pressing housing shortage in Leipzig and other cities.
