Eisenbahnstraße: End of the prohibition of weapons zone causes excitement!
Eisenbahnstraße 84, 04316 Leipzig, Deutschland - The Eisenbahnstrasse in Leipzig-Volkmarsdorf is no longer run as a prohibition on weapons. This decision is in line with the current efforts of the Saxon Ministry of the Interior to implement the cancellation of the zone. However, a temporal framework for this measure was not announced, as reported lvz.de.
Police spokesman Moritz Peters said that the powers of the police do not change with the abolition of the weapon ban zone. The police remain authorized to carry out suspicion -independent controls at the main crime. The Eisenbahnstrasse is still a focus of the police work.
background of the weapon ban zone
The weapon ban zone was set up in November 2018 to improve the security situation in the area. However, this measure was criticized by parts of politics and society as stigmatizing. The step to cancel the zone was linked to the condition that a police station would be set up in Eisenbahnstrasse.
On June 25th, a new police station opened at Eisenbahnstrasse 84, accompanied by protests. Despite the demonstrations, the post is well received by many residents. He offers office hours from Monday to Thursday and has three officials as a contact person.
Criticism of the police station and weapon ban zone
Despite the positive response of parts of the residents, there is also considerable criticism, especially from the Left Party. Juliane Nagel, member of the state parliament and city councilor, expressed that the costs of the police station - almost one million euros for the renovation and monthly costs of 2400 euros - were not justified. She argues that social guarantees and resources are more important for a good neighborly coexistence than the presence of police forces.
The Left Party has repeatedly critically viewed both the weapon ban zone and the police station. Nagel states that the prohibition of weapons does not contribute to safety or better coexistence. Instead, she leads to a devaluation of the area and the criminalization of people. A study carried out by the University of Leipzig confirms that the zone had little influence on general crime, while serious conflicts were largely failing to do. The majority of the residents want preventive measures against drug trafficking and garbage instead of increased police presence.
