Tempo 30 in Stötteritz: Noise protection for children from Monday!

From next Monday, June 15, 2025, Kolmstrasse in Stötteritz, a district of Leipzig, will become a 30 km/h zone. This measure is part of the city's efforts to reduce noise pollution in the area. In this zone, which includes the section between Commander-Prendel-Allee and Holzhäuser Straße, cars will have to drive more slowly in the future. The Southeast City District Advisory Board initiated this initiative to improve the quality of life of residents and, in particular, to ensure the safety of students.

The new regulations ensure that the speed limit is reduced to 30 km/h in areas where noise measurements of over 65 decibels are recorded during the day and more than 55 decibels at night. In Kolmstrasse, the noise levels exceed these guidelines, which is why the adjustments are absolutely necessary. This measure will be implemented at a cost of around 3,000 euros for the signage.

Objectives and legal framework

The introduction of the 30 km/h zone corresponds to the city council's noise action plan, which was set out in a second update. The aim is to improve the health and safety aspects for residents and to reduce the risk of accidents by reducing speeds. Children in particular should be better protected on their way to school.

The initiative to strengthen 30 km/h zones is not just local, but part of a broader approach that is anchored in a report by the Federal Environment Agency. This report, which contains concrete recommendations for adapting draft laws and regulations, is intended to support municipalities in reducing obstacles that prevent the implementation of Tempo 30. The research work includes the analysis of the technical and legal barriers identified in a project as well as the development of recommendations for changes to provide legal support for the introduction of Tempo 30 in cities and municipalities umweltbundesamt.de.

Social significance of 30 km/h speed limit

The introduction of 30 km/h zones is not only seen as a measure to reduce noise, but also as a contribution to improving climate protection. Policymakers agree that such measures can help reduce traffic volumes and the associated environmental impact. Raising citizens' awareness of environmentally friendly behavior is also an important part of this strategy.

The implementation of the new speed limit on Kolmstrasse is a first step in the right direction. The hope is that such measures will also be taken up in other parts of Leipzig or in generally noise-plagued regions of Germany in the future in order to significantly improve the quality of life of the residents.
