Silver shine & buddy death: discover the dark side of the Erzgebirge!

The exhibition “Silver Shine & Buddy Death”, which opens today on June 3, 2025, is a significant event in the State Museum of Archeology in Chemnitz. This comprehensive exhibition runs from October 26, 2024 to June 29, 2025 and addresses the profound impact of mining on the Erzgebirge region over three and a half millennia. The location for this exhibition, the museum at Stefan-Heym-Platz 1, offers the perfect setting to explore the different facets of this important industry.

Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday and public holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., while the museum is open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. On Sunday, November 3, 2024, there will be a special opening at 11 a.m. for a special event. Admission to the exhibition is 8 euros regular and 5 euros reduced. Children under 17 have free entry. Insights into the exhibition

The exhibition not only focuses on the technical developments in mining, but also addresses the environmental destruction caused by these activities. Visitors are confronted with the complex relationship between the wealth and beauty made possible by mining and the negative aspects such as despair and death. This dual perspective raises the question of what lessons can be learned from history for the future of the region.

The exhibition particularly emphasizes the solidarity that was cultivated among people in adverse circumstances, and the current exploration of deposits by investors is critically examined. This gives the exhibition a current relevance by dealing with sustainability and ethical issues surrounding mining, which is also presented in detail on the Chemnitz2025 website Chemnitz2025.

With its mix of historical and contemporary perspectives, “Silber Glanz & Buddytod” offers a deep insight into the culture of mining and its inseparable connection to the identity of the Erzgebirge region. Visitors are invited to embark on an informative and emotionally engaging journey through the history and present of mining.
