On July 18, 2025, a 79-year-old man, who had been missing since June 22, was recovered dead from Lake Staffelsee in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district. The bather who discovered the lifeless person on the surface of the water immediately informed the Oberland integrated control center. The rescue was then carried out by the water rescue services from Uffing and Kochel am See Antenna.de reported.
The man, a swimmer from Munich, went into the lake with a companion on June 22nd during an excursion. While they were on a pedal boat, the 79-year-old went into the water and was unable to return to the boat. His companion tried in vain to hold him and from then on he was considered missing. Investigations started
The Weilheim criminal police have taken over the investigation, in collaboration with the Munich II public prosecutor's office. According to current information, there is no evidence of third-party negligence or involvement of third parties. However, investigations continue to clarify the exact circumstances of the incident.
The month-long tragedy of the missing man highlights the dangers that can arise from careless behavior in the water. During the search operation, the emergency services did their best to find the 79-year-old as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, the search ended with the sad discovery that affected many people in the region.
