50 years of rescue service in Seehausen: A look at heroic beginnings!
An important celebration took place in Seehausen, where the mobile rescue service celebrated its 50th anniversary. Founded on May 2, 1975, it represents a decisive advance in emergency medical care, because at that time in the GDR there were only a few places in the GDR with ambulances staffed by doctors, such as Rostock, Magdeburg and Berlin. The pioneers of this rescue service, including emergency doctor Dr. Walter Fiedler and patient transport operator Klaus-Dieter Müller had a significant impact on the early years. Stendal district reports that District Administrator Patrick Puhlmann presented a certificate to the founding team on the occasion of the celebration.
The festive event included a tour between the Seehäuser Hospital and today's rescue station, during which Dr. Fiedler described the history and conversion of a Barkas B 1000. These vehicles, once manned by a doctor, a medical transport operator and a nurse, were in their day equipped with medical equipment, including ventilators and inhalers as well as medical supplies. The crew had basic training in first aid and mostly came from the fields of anesthesia and intensive care medicine.
The commitment of the pioneers
During the celebration, District Administrator Puhlmann honored the tireless commitment and humanity of the founding pioneers, who made a decisive contribution to improving medical care in the region. He highlighted that the mobile rescue service has been seen as indispensable since its inception. Stephanie Bütow from Johanniteraccident-Hilfe also took part in the discussions to discuss the current situation of the emergency service.
The celebration not only looked back on the past, but also looked forward to the future. The anticipation of the construction of a new rescue station is already noticeable and is seen as a further step towards improving emergency care in the region.
The development of the rescue service in the GDR
The beginnings of the rescue service in the GDR were characterized by an interaction between independent organizations, including professional and factory fire brigade commands. These initiated civil ambulance transport and the rescue service. The use of modified ambulances (KTW), equipped with special medical equipment, was widespread. How drk-ddr.de describes, these vehicles, like the Barkas B 1000, consisted of a variety of medical equipment necessary for effective emergency care.
The equipment included, among other things, ventilators, transport equipment such as stretchers and special medical supplies. These developments have laid the foundation for today's rescue service and promoted its continuous improvement.
The 50th anniversary of the emergency service in Seehausen can therefore be seen as a symbol of the progress and challenges in emergency care over the past decades and therefore remains an important part of the region's health history.
