Drama in the night: car fire, vending machine blown up and fraud choc!
In the early morning of June 14, 2025, there was a fire in Leipzig that affected several electric vehicles. In the inner courtyard of the town hall in Schönefeld-Abtnaundorf, three Opel Mokkas burned down completely around 12:15 a.m. The material damage is estimated at around 100,000 euros, while an electric charging station was also damaged. The fire department was on site quickly and needed two extinguishing containers to extinguish the fire. The criminal police have started the investigation and a fire investigator is being appointed to clarify the exact cause of the fire.
Just a few hours earlier, the police recorded a speed check near Kitzscher. Of the almost 500 vehicles measured, 90 were registered above the permitted maximum speed of 70 km/h. The fastest driver, a 36-year-old man, was measured at 130 km/h, which corresponds to 56 km/h too fast after tolerance deductions. He will have to prepare for a fine of 480 euros, two points in Flensburg and a driving ban of one month.
Several crimes in Oschatz and Frohburg
A significant case of fraud occurred in Oschatz on June 11th, in which an 83-year-old fell victim to a fake bank employee. The unknown perpetrator obtained access data for online banking by telephone and then initiated several debits totaling 90,000 euros. The injured party filed a complaint about computer fraud.
On the same evening, June 13th, a ticket machine was blown up in Frohburg. Witnesses heard a loud bang at 11:30 p.m. and informed the police. It turned out that the perpetrators were using unknown pyrotechnics. The cash boxes from the ATM were stolen, the exact amount is still unknown. The estimated material damage amounts to around 30,000 euros. The federal police deployed a defuser while the criminal police began investigating the explosion.
Increasing number of vending machine explosions
In general, the increase in ATM explosions is a worrying trend. As on the website of the BKA documented, ATMs are often the target of physical attacks by criminals who are now increasingly using advanced explosives such as solid explosives. The acts endanger not only property, but also life and limb. There were 392 recorded explosions in 2021, with a significant increase in the use of solid explosives.
To counteract this worrying development, the BKA and the Federal Ministry of the Interior signed a joint declaration in November 2022 to promote concerted measures to combat and prevent these crimes.
The events of the last few days in and around Leipzig illustrate the complexity of the current security situation, which includes both traffic law and security policy aspects.
