Winter in Berchtesgadener Land: Slope operations face major challenges!
In the winter of 2023/2024, it was decided to realign alpine ski operations at Jenner, a popular ski area. Originally no piste preparation was planned for the valley run. But a municipal grant of 300,000 euros ensured that ski operations could be maintained for another season. However, according to the annual report by BBAG board member Thomas Mühlthaler, this decision was not worth it, as the winter season is considered the third warmest in history and the sales achieved remained low.
An interesting development in guest composition was noted: 70 percent of tickets sold went to pedestrians, highlighting the need to adapt to the changing needs of winter visitors. In order to respond to this demand, the children's area at the valley station will remain open this season for families and beginner skiers. A simple blue piste at the middle station will be groomed and also covered with snow to meet the needs of winter hikers and freeriders, who will also use natural snow in open terrain in the future.
Current developments at Jenner
As stated in the Schneehoehen report, skiing on the snow-covered and groomed slopes will continue exclusively between the valley station and the middle station in the 2023/2024 winter season. The cable car and the Jennerwiesenbahn remain in operation, while above the middle station there is only one marked ski route in unprepared terrain. This allows visitors to travel in untouched terrain, with a designated ascent path for tourers up to the middle station.
The Mitterkaserbahn, which was inaugurated in 2019, will virtually be shut down this season. This is part of a strategic realignment, as the low sales from ski guests - around 400,000 euros last winter - are not able to cover the increased costs. The municipality has therefore taken over the costs of snowmaking and preparing the descent in order to continue to offer attractive winter sports.
In summary, the adjustments to the Jenner take into account both the changing needs of guests and the financial challenges that operators face. It is hoped that the measures adopted will continue to offer visitors a correspondingly attractive winter holiday offer in the future.
