HÄPPI pilot project in Schönau: General practitioners rely on the digital future!

A groundbreaking pilot project is starting in Bavaria that is intended to increase efficiency in general practitioner practices. Under the name HÄPPI (General Practitioner Primary Care Center - Interprofessional Patient Care), nine selected practices are taking part in the three-year test to test new structures and digital tools to optimize patient care. The practices affected aim to create more time for patients through improved distribution of tasks and the integration of non-medical health professionals. The group practice of Dr. Wienert and Dr. Eder in Schönau am Königssee in Berchtesgadener Land is one of the participating institutions. The project officially began on July 1, 2025, and is intended to serve as a model for future family practices.

According to information from PNP HÄPPI aims to improve general medical care and enable practices to implement interprofessional teamwork. Digital tools are used that not only increase efficiency, but also promote the health literacy of vulnerable groups. Another goal is to control the health system through targeted networking and gatekeeping in order to avoid over-, under- and incorrect care.

Goals and advantages of the HÄPPI concept

The HÄPPI concept was developed in cooperation with the University of Heidelberg. Loud HÄEV The project pursues several central goals:

  • Stärkung der Patientenverantwortung durch Rückmeldungen über Patient-Reported-Outcomes (PROs).
  • Einbindung nicht-ärztlicher Gesundheitsberufe in die Teampraxis.
  • Förderung der Ambulantisierung durch modulare Versorgungsoptionen.

These measures are aimed at enabling even small practices to provide sustainable patient care. The core elements of HÄPPI can be implemented regardless of the size of the practice, which is particularly important for rural areas.

Financial support and implementation

Financial support is provided by innovative health insurance companies, which provide monetary resources in cooperation in accordance with Section 73b SGB V. The first pilot took place in Baden-Württemberg in 2024 with scientific support to evaluate the feasibility and success of the project. This comprehensive structure enables practices to continuously develop and optimize patient care.

Overall, HÄPPI stands for a modern approach to primary care that addresses current needs in patient care and paves the way for future-proof care concepts. The experiences and results from the pilot practices in Bavaria could point the way for the further development of primary care in Germany.
